The Mac Hosts File: How to Modify /etc/hosts in OS X with TextEdit

Link: http://osxdaily.com/2016/02/29/modify-hosts-mac-os-x-textedit/

Another Great tip from MacOSX Daily!

The Mac hosts file is a system level file located at /etc/hosts which maps IP addresses to host names for Mac OS X networking. Many users edit and modify the hosts file so that they can point a domain to a different IP address, whether for the purpose of local development, blocking sites, or simply to access alternate servers from various apps and system level functions. Most advanced users will edit the hosts file from the OS X Terminal using nano or vim, but for those who prefer to stay within the Mac OS GUI, you can also modify the Mac’s hosts file through TextEdit, or even a third party app like BBEdit or TextWrangler. This offers a more user friendly option compared to going through the command line.

If you don’t have a specific reason to modify the Mac hosts file in OS X, you should not do so. An incorrectly formatted hosts file or improper entry can lead to DNS issues and problems with various internet services. This is for advanced users.

How to Modify the Mac Hosts File at /etc/hosts with TextEdit OS X

This approach to changing /etc/hosts with TextEdit works with any version of OS X. For Mac users who are running OS X 10.11 or later releases, you must first disable SIP protection however, otherwise the Mac /etc/hosts file will be locked when attempting to access it from TextEdit.

Quit TextEdit if it is currently open
Launch the Terminal application in Mac OS X, found within /Applications/Utilities/
Enter the following command exactly to open the Macs hosts file within the TextEdit GUI application

    sudo open -a TextEdit /etc/hosts

Hit return and enter the admin password for OS X when requested to authenticate the launch through sudo

The /etc/hosts file will launch into TextEdit as a plain text file where it can be edited and modified as need be, when finished use File > Save or hit Command+S as usual to save the changes to the hosts document *

Quit out of TextEdit, then quit out of Terminal when finished

* If the hosts file shows as “locked” and won’t save changes despite being launched through sudo, it’s likely because you didn’t disable SIP as mentioned in the introduction. You can turn off SIP in OS X with these instructions, which requires a reboot of the Mac. This is necessary for modern versions of OS X, though you can choose to edit the hosts file using the command line with nano as described here without adjusting SIP.

It’s good practice to make a duplicate of the hosts file so that if you break something you can easily fix it, though we’ve got the original default hosts file here in case you need to restore it. It’s also a good idea to set plain text mode as the default for TextEdit.

You’ll likely want to clear out your DNS cache after modifying the hosts file, here’s how to flush DNS in OS X El Capitan and modern versions Mac OS and how to do the same in prior releases.

Users can also choose to modify Mac OS X’s /etc/hosts with TextWrangler, BBEdit, or another third party application. The trick is largely the same as Text Edit, still requiring the use of sudo, but changing the specified application name as follows.

Opening /etc/hosts with TextWrangler:

sudo open -a TextWrangler /etc/hosts

Or launching /etc/hosts into Bbedit:

sudo open -a BBEdit /etc/hosts

While the aforementioned approaches work in all modern versions of OS X, earlier versions of Mac OS X can also launch the TextEdit binary with hosts directly from the command line with the following syntax:

sudo ./Applications/TextEdit.app/Contents/MacOS/TextEdit /etc/hosts

That method will not work in the latest releases, however, thus you’ll want to rely on the open command instead.

Seth Resurrected (Redux) M4

Seth Resurrected (Redux) M4

Seth is a 'natural born' Vampire, both of his parents being Vampires at the time he was conceived and born. He is part Mountain Fae (bean-sidhe or Banshee) on his father's side and part Human on his mother's side. His father was also a famous Fae Battle-Mage and a shape-shifter of the ancient Red Wolf Clan. Seth also learned this knowledge from his father.

His mother and father are considered "The Queen and King of the Vampires" by most  other Vampires. He's roughly 500 years old and has had his ups and downs with his 'condition'. He's all too aware of the fact of having no choice in the matter, as so becomes deeply troubled at times. He's at the point now where he's trying to not be so possessed by that violent nature. Still, he will become brooding and morose at times.

Seth Redux is a M4 morph created with Morphs++ by Sidhe Rose Graphics.

His body, genital and face skins are also customized by Sidhe Rose Graphics, as
well as all his eye MATs unless noted otherwise.

This Redux product has upgraded Seth's skin mats and general materials. This pack uses NORMAL and Displacement maps. His poses have also been redone. Seth now has three different Head morphs for variety of character, including his original head morph.

Please read NOTES: if you have the PREVIOUS version of Seth by SRG.

Everything needed for Seth is included in this package.

Seth's poses are universal and will work on any M4 figure. Some adjustment may be required for clothing, body size and for chair, as well as pov or if you do not use his body morph. Most outfits fit him with little adjustment. Others may need some adjustment.

Please leave IK OFF for poses. Apply Genitals and Gen-Fix AFTER posing for best result if using. Adjust to preference after the application of 'Genital character', Gen_MAT and Gen FIX - in  that order.

As a character, Seth likes to wear high large heeled boots, ergo his feet in his poses are a little higher off the floor than usual to accomodate these. Adjust as necessary for lower  heeled boots.

All injections, removals, poses and application of textures can be found in the Pose  directory under SRG_Seth.

If you happen to have his old pack it is suggested you remove it or place it in a  separate runtime. That is your choice but the two will not match in renders and you  may encounter Poser getting confused over which mats to load.

- Load M4 into Poser document from the DAZ People directory in the FIGURES library.
- Select M4.
- Inject M4's MORPHS ++.
- From the POSE library, find SRG_Seth/Morphs:

- Inject Head and Body Morphs, which loads both selected Head and Body Morphs at once.

- The Utilities in Seth's Pose directory are Turn IK Off/On and Default Pose.

- The Utilities directory will also allow you to turn Inverse Kinematics (IK) OFF for posing him.
It is suggested that you always turn IK off when posing him.

_ Regarding Genitals: Do not apply Genital until after he is Body morphed and posed as you want
him, then Load Genital > Conform to, and use the Gen Fix to adjust the fit properly.

Howler 10, Update 1 - RC26

We have released an update to PD Howler 10. It is now shipping as RC26. It is a free update for users of the original first release of v10.0.

We're still calling it v10.0 (not 10.1) but specifically RC26.

If you already have v10, you will soon receive an email with notification for re-downloading the current v10 installer. You can uninstall the old one or simply installer the new v10 over the old v10.

What's New in Howler 10 RC26?

We will be adding more mages, videos and tutorials here over time:

Here's a brief summary of what's in it so far:

Automatic brush sizing while painting, based on Swap image
A new option under 'Grid setting' (where you also fine artist guides) which is called 'Z Scale Guide' allows the scale of a brush to be affected by the value seen in the Swap image underneath, while painting. This can be used in many clever ways to make the brush get smaller or larger automagically, based on where you paint. For example, a greyscale gradient that goes white to black from bottom to top will make grass brushes appear to get smaller further up, in the distance.

In the example shown here:
  1. Left side: no change in the Swap image, so the brush sows at whatever size it currently has. (which of course can also be subject to tablet pressure and/or random size and speed-controlled size changes).
  2. Middle segment: The gradient in the Swap image goes from white at bottom to black at top. The scaling by Swap (aka Z-scale) is making the brush image change size automagically. The darker the pixels in the Swap image, the smaller the brush size. This can be an efficient way to convey perspective size based on 'distance' for example for painting over a landscape photo or a 3D rendering.
  3. Right segment: Here we have hidden the swap image from view. The net result is that you only see the brush strokes you made, and the size was automagically adjusted based on the hidden Swap image.

The Brush size can be enveloped.
There's a post effect for the brush stroke that resizes the brush along the path, with a graph editor to set the progression. Look for it in the View menu. More on this to come soon.

The symmetry tool now has a interactive center handle.
This allows you to see where the symmetry line is, and to grab and move it. Very intuitive.

The palette mixer now uses bristle brushes instead of the former mixing brush.

Fixed a bug where colors weren't picked on mouse down: The mouse had to move to pick a color.

Editing pigment based themes on the color picker now has the option to pick an RGB color in addition to preset pigments.

A much requested feature: Optipustic particles can now be scaled.
This makes it very easy to change their size so you can quickly change from drawing, for example, tufts of grass appearing small in a distance, and big nearby. Furthermore, that also allows it to scale like other brushes based on the brightness of the pixels in the Swap image, mentioned earlier.

Fixed a bug on the “Open a new palette mixer” feature where the Use Brush/Open/Save buttons were hidden.

New feature in Bristle brushes: Salt and Pepper
With this extra control, you can adjust the level of embossing to give the bristles a deeper cut into the paint.
